Blackjack Rules How to Play Blackjack Beginners Guide
You forfeit half your stake rather than playing the hand out. You double your original bet and receive exactly one additional card, with no further cards permitted. No further cards are drawn (wave your hand flat over the cards to stand). A blackjack beats any other 21 and pays 3 to 2, provided the dealer doesn’t also hold a blackjack, in which case the hand is a push. Unlike most casino games, skill directly influences the outcome.
So, let’s take a look at this crucial aspect of basic blackjack strategy now. Your hand can lose against the dealer’s hand, but then you might cover your lost bet with a win on an insurance bet. Blackjack pays 3 to 2, or in some online casinos, Blackjack pays 6 to 5, which refers to payoffs and odds.
To work out the total points value of your hand, the individual card values are added together. The goal of blackjack is to score more points than the dealer without going over 21. Vingt-Un was brought to the United States in the early 19th Century and renamed blackjack in 1899. The game made its way to Britain around the late 18th Century, with the rules first being laid out in ‘Hoyle’s Games Improved’, from 1800, where it was called Vingt-Un. While you can split regardless of the value of the two cards, it’s more strategic in some cases than others.
We hope you enjoy this in-depth look at blackjack as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. Blackjack is an absolutely classic game you can find at every casino. If blackjack only counts for 10% or less towards your wagering requirement, that’s not good value in my opinion. Under the new 10x wagering requirements introduced by the UKGC, bonuses are fairer in terms of access to winnings, but you still need to check game weighting and contribution. This means that non-live RNG blackjack software is certified by independent testing agencies.
Puzzle & Strategy Games
When you are dealt a blackjack in a face-down game, turn the cards face up, and smile. Once the bets are placed, the dealer makes two passes around the table, starting at their left, so every player and the dealer have two cards each. Blackjack games follow the same rules regardless of whether a player is playing for free or putting up their own money. The house edge is lower in blackjack online than in most other casino games. You’ll do this when you have a low total, or if you think your best chance to win is to improve your hand while playing blackjack online. These blackjack games allow you to win real money, which is something you can’t do when you play in free or practice games.
- Before you can play a hand, you need to know what each card is worth.
- A hard 20 is one of the strongest hands you can have.
- Not every site will allow you to, so an even better step would be to check out each recommended blackjack site’s reviews to see which ones give you this option.
- Use it to test basic strategy decisions, get familiar with the table layout, and try unfamiliar variants before risking a single chip.
- Generally, if the dealer’s upcard is a 6 or lower, players should not hit unless their hand is 11 or lower.

For blackjack variants where the dealer peeks for blackjack, they will check for a blackjack before the players play their hands and turn over their hole card if they do have blackjack. With no-peek blackjack variants, the dealer either has a hole card but doesn’t check for blackjack before the players play their hands, or doesn’t have a hole card at all (European Blackjack). Unless the cards that you split were aces, you’ll then be able to hit either of your hands and, depending on the rules of the game, in some cases, double or split again (known as re-splitting). Like baccarat, roulette, video poker, and poker games, many blackjack variants have different rules, gameplay, paytables, side bets, and RTP averages.

Don’t risk your own hand when the dealer is already in trouble. When the dealer shows a weak upcard (4, 5, or 6), they are more likely to bust. This applies regardless of what the dealer is showing. Hard 17 is the cutoff — the risk of busting outweighs any potential gain slots not on gamstop from hitting. A soft 17 feels strong but it isn’t — you can’t bust on the next card, so there’s no reason to stand. Hit (or double, depending on the dealer’s upcard).
